Functional Medicine Assessment
A 90-minute consultative appointment for individuals interested in becoming a patient at RIPNS. Prior to the appointment we ask you to fill out your health history and profile using our comprehensive and powerful secured online information organization platform–LivingMatrix. Because finding the root cause of your symptoms requires our functional medicine practitioners to gather and organize a lot more information about our patients than other providers do, we ask that you provide as much detail as possible so that we can hit the ground running in this first visit. We will take a close look at interactions among your genetic, environmental, and lifestyle factors that have influenced your health over the long term, and use your current symptoms, health history, and biomarkers as clues to help pinpoint your system imbalances that are keeping you from reaching optimal physical and mental health.
Advanced Laboratory Testing
Addressing the root cause of your symptoms, including depression, fatigue, and anxiety– often requires more targeted and comprehensive testing that can really give us clues about what is going on in your body–this could mean a 3-day stool analysis test that gives us information on how well you are digesting and absorbing the nutrients from your food, as well as the health of your “microbiome”. It could mean a comprehensive nutrient profile to see if you have nutritional imbalances that need to be corrected, or maybe salivary cortisol testing to see if you are in the stages of adrenal fatigue. We also regularly order MTHFR and COMT genomic testing as these single nucleotide polymorphisms are particularly relevant in mental health.
Following your initial 90-minute new patient consultation and case review by our team, if we believe that our practice and our approach are the right fit for you and you are ready to commit to making changes, we will recommend either our 3 or 6 month curriculum program to you depending on the level of care we think you will need. If you are in need of a basic “reset” the treatment emphasis will mainly be on detoxing and healing your gut, with education about balancing your stress hormones and optimizing your immune function. If you are looking to safely and slowly discontinue use of your antidepressants, or if you are currently stable on psychiatric medications and may need them adjusted as you start addressing the actual underlying causes of your mental and physical symptoms, advanced lab testing is ordered at the beginning of your program and again every 3 months to gauge improvements in your health. We may also order more comprehensive blood and urine nutrient testing, or advanced hormone testing if we feel it is necessary.
Whether you are struggling with uncomfortable digestive problems, hormone imbalances, adrenal fatigue, difficulties losing or gaining weight, low energy levels, or autoimmune issues, working with our integrative nutritionist Jessica Godfrey can help you make sense of which foods your body needs to thrive. Based on your personal history, genetic and environmental influences, as well as advanced nutrient testing Jessica will work with you to create a structured and personalized eating plan. From guidance on eating for brain health and mood optimization, to safely following a detox protocol, or eating to restore adrenal health, Jessica works collaboratively with you to help you meet your specific and personalized nutrition goals.
Though we can prescribe medications to treat various mental health/psychiatric issues our patients are experiencing, this is not the focus of treatment at our practice. We truly believe that improved mental and physical health are better achieved in the long term through fundamental lifestyle changes and restoring balance to your body’s systems that are not functioning at an optimal level. Medication is not prescribed during the initial consultative visit but is an option for patients participating in our programs.
